A writing resolution

As those of you who know me will know, I quite enjoy writing. For those of you who have known me for the past six years or longer, you will probably be bored of me talking about the fantastic idea for a play that I had in 2006 but have still miraculously failed to produce.

When planning my recent trip to Russia I had optimistically thought that I would be able to utilise the 18 or so days I had out of the office to make a dent in the aforementioned play (which is partly based in Russia). It turns out (rather predictably, given how much I bang on about how great train travel is for helping to cross cultural boundaries) that the time travelling to and within Russia was much better spent talking to people rather than retreating into my own play-writing world.

I have now finally admitted to myself (and it has literally taken six years) that the idea of both writing an epic play and building a revolutionary European train business, at the same time, is too ambitious a goal. I am committed to putting my all into Loco2 until we are either successful in achieving our goals or until we fail so comprehensively that it’s clear we should pack up our bags and go home. And whilst it has been somewhat of a personal struggle to make the choice, the trip to Russia made me realise that the play is definitely going to come second. The prospect of taking the necessary six months off Loco2 to actually write it is unfeasible given how much exciting work there is to do.

Aaaanyway, this is all a very long-winded way of saying that this blog will now see more action. It’s been almost an entire year since my last post. Getting into the head-space required to write a play is not going to happen whilst I’m focused on Loco2, but I don’t want to neglect non-Loco2 writing in its entirety, (i) because I enjoy it (ii) because I think of smaller interesting things than entire plays to write about on a fairly regular basis and (iii) because if I’m going to be a successful writer at some point in my life, I should probably keep practising it as a hobby in the meantime.

I’m sure there are very few people reading this, but those of you who are please do let me know if there is anything in particular you’d like my opinion on, as I’m sure there will be weeks (I am planning to update the blog on a weekly basis) when I can’t think of anything good to write about. In these instances I’ll probably end up writing a generic post about not much interesting (a bit like this one), and so any ideas will be gratefully received!
